What is a silver filling?

fillings of Silver amalgam

Silver fillings

Silver fillings are a mixture (amalgam) of several metals including Mercury, Silver, Copper, Zinc, Nickle, and possibly others. It consists of a powder of the solid metals mixed right before placing with liquid mercury. These harden within a few minutes in the tooth.

Why do many dentists still use silver fillings?

The amalgam material is quite hard and has been the filling of choice since the 1800's. They are cheap, and easy to place.

What is wrong with silver fillings?

Silver fillings can crack teeth over time. These fillings are often sensitive to cold after placement. Amalgam fillings pose a hazard to the environment and to some people. They are ugly and discolor teeth.

Silver fillings (amalgam fillings) contain about 50% Mercury.Concern about Mercury toxicity has arisen in the past 2 decades. These Mercury laden fillings are falling into less use today and are banned in several parts of the World. They are also now not recommended for young children and pregnant women according to the FDA and the ADA. We at Crystal Lake Dental Associates have stopped placing silver fillings as of 1998 due to our concern over Mercury toxicity and pollution of our water supply by the Mercury in our waste water.

What is a Composite filling?

fillings of white composite

white composite and CEREC fillings

A composite (white) filling is a blend of plastic resin and fillers (usually Quartz). This combination of materials gives it great natural color. Composite (natural) fillings can be almost any shade to match your teeth. Composite fillings are bonded to your tooth so your tooth becomes stronger.

Why Are More Dentists Placing Composite fillings?

There has been a health and cosmetic revolution in the past few decades. As people pay more attention to their smile, the dental office evolved had to evolve. We now have new  cosmetic filling materials that meet these higher health and cosmetic standards.

Are Cosmetic White Fillings Long Lasting?

Yes, The newer materials have better wear resistance, shrink resistance and strength. Composite fillings can be repaired easily without total replacement. Cosmetic (tooth Colored) fillings are more time consuming and difficult to place, so they can cost a bit more than a silver filling. We at Crystal Lake Dental Associates truly think that Composite fillings are healthier for you and your family.

What is CEREC inlays and onlays?

Formed out of a solid block of porcelain, these are the strongest filling available in a single visit. CEREC is state of the art CAD/CAM technology offered exclusively in Crystal Lake by Dr. Neal. CEREC can be the last filling a tooth ever needs.

Why is Dr, Neal the only dentist in Crystal Lake doing CEREC?

Dr. Neal has always been a leader in technology.  The future of dentistry has arrived at Crystal Lake dental Associates in the form of CEREC. In the future more dentists will adopt digital impression technology. The technology is a little more expensive, but you and your family do deserve the best now.
