Dental Caries (tooth decay) is a contagious disease. Tooth decay is a multifactorial disease which has been poorly understood till now. Bacteria in the mouth form a community we call plaque. In this complex community of plaque are certain bacteria like Strep Mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilis which excrete lactic acid. This acid dissolves the minerals in your teeth forming the classic cavity. If plaque is not removed regularly, and the diet is rich in carbohydrates (starches and sugars), high acid levels can build up quickly. Your saliva is a buffer and can aid neutralizing the acid to a certain degree. People with low saliva flow naturally or due to age or medications, are at higher risk for cavities.
