Wisdom Teeth

Dr. Neal has extensive training in wisdom teeth removal and minor oral surgery.

wisdom teeth poorly positioned

Wisdom teeth are a valuable asset to the mouth when they are healthy and properly positioned. Often, however, problems develop that require their removal. When the jaw isn't large enough to accommodate wisdom teeth, they can become impacted (unable to come in or misaligned). Wisdom teeth may grow sideways, emerge only part way from the gum or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.

Wisdom teeth removal is generally recommended when:

  • Wisdom teeth only partially erupt  ( called impacted wisdom teeth ). This leaves an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection (pericoronitis). Pain, swelling, jaw stiffness and general illness can result.

  • There is a chance that poorly aligned wisdom teeth will damage adjacent teeth.

  • A cyst (fluid-filled sac) forms, destroying surrounding structures such as bone or tooth roots.
Patients should ask the dentist about the health and positioning of their wisdom teeth. We may make a recommendation for wisdom teeth removal or send the patient to an oral surgery office for further evaluation.

For many patients with a toothache, removal of a tooth can seem quite scary. We understand your fear and take many steps to insure your comfort and confidence. Dr. Neal knows proper extraction technique and adequate use of medications and anesthetic are key to a great comfortable result.

Comfortable anesthetic delivery is vital

Dr. Neal uses a special super topical anesthetic on your gums prior to numbing the area. He also uses THE WAND for anesthetic delivery to the area. THE WAND is a computerized anesthetic delivery device that delivers the medication very gently insuring maximum comfort.

For more anxious patients

We also have Laughing Gas (nitrous oxide) for the more anxious patient. In more extreme cases, we can provide anxiety free dental care with oral pre-medications like Valium and other medications to help calm patients fears.

No substitute for great techniques

Dr. Neal has perfected several techniques to achieve maximum comfort during the extraction procedure and will not hesitate to use these techniques to insure your comfort.

Many patients comment that they never felt anything during the numbing in addition to no discomfort during the extraction procedure. People comment constantly at how comfortable and quick the procedure was. They are often amazed at Dr. Neal's skill and competence.
